Allah is Al-‘Adl (ٱلْعَدْلُ), the One who governs with perfect justice and balance. He sets all matters
right, gives every being what it deserves, and ensures that nothing is misplaced or treated unfairly. His justice is precise, complete, and rooted in wisdom.
Linguistic Meaning and Origin
such as justice, fairness, balance, rectification, and setting things in their proper place. It reflects not only fairness, but also perfect alignment, proportion, and moral balance.
Scholarly Perspective
Some scholars have differed on whether Al-‘Adl is explicitly listed as one of the formal Names of Allah, as it does not appear directly in the Qur’an in the same definitive form.
However, the concept of divine justice is repeatedly affirmed throughout the Qur’an and Hadith, leaving no doubt about its central role in understanding Allah’s nature.
Divine Justice in the Qur’an
Allah declares that He is free from all forms of ظلم (injustice): “Indeed, Allah does not ظلم even the weight of an atom. If there is a good deed, He multiplies it…” (Qur’an 4:40)
He also commands justice as a fundamental principle: “Indeed, Allah orders justice, excellence, and giving to relatives…” (Qur’an 16:90)
And affirms that His words and decrees are grounded in justice: “The word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice.” (Qur’an 6:115)
Justice as a Divine Standard
In a sacred hadith, Allah declares:
“I have forbidden oppression for Myself and made it forbidden among you, so do not ظلم one another.”
This establishes justice not only as a divine attribute, but also as a moral obligation for humanity. Understanding Suffering and Justice
The existence of suffering can raise difficult questions about justice. Islam addresses this by placing life within a broader framework:
This world is temporary and a place of testing
Hardships are part of a measured and purposeful plan
Ultimate justice is realized fully in the Hereafter
Allah says:
“We will surely test you with fear, hunger, loss of wealth and lives…” (Qur’an 2:155)
The Prophet ﷺ also taught that even the smallest hardship can erase sins.
This shows that what may appear as suffering can carry hidden mercy and justice.
Balance in Divine Decree
Allah’s justice is always:
Proportionate – No soul is burdened beyond its capacity
Comprehensive – Every action is accounted for
Purposeful – Nothing occurs without meaning
“Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.” (Qur’an 2:286)
Even when outcomes are not immediately understood, they remain within a framework of perfect justice.
The Justice of the Hereafter Islam teaches that complete justice may not always be visible in this life, but it is fully realized in the next.
For example, children who pass away are granted eternal reward and honor. The Prophet ﷺ
described them as being in Paradise, interceding for their parents.
This reinforces that divine justice extends beyond worldly outcomes.
The Reward of Justice
Practicing justice is highly honored in Islam:
“Those who act justly will be on pulpits of light… those who are just in their judgments and their
dealings.”
Justice is not limited to courts or leadership, it applies to:
Personal decisions
Family relationships
Everyday interactions
A Call to Uphold Justice
The Qur’an sets a high standard: “Stand firmly for justice, even against yourselves or your parents and relatives…” (Qur’an 4:135)
This requires:
Objectivity over personal bias
Truth over ego
Integrity over convenience
A Reflection for the Seeker
Understanding Al-‘Adl invites self-examination:
Do we seek truth, or merely defend our position?
Are we fair in our judgments, even when it is difficult?
Do we treat ourselves and others with balance and respect?
Justice also applies internally—being fair to oneself by avoiding self-harm, neglect, or moral
compromise.
